A NEW, NO-LEAD STANDARD.
Effective January 4th, 2015, the government’s No-Lead Act has made leaded brass products obsolete for potable water applications. For our customer’s sake, GPS has transitioned our inventory to lead-free brass.
Here’s how GPS moved to GET THE LEAD OUT!
- All brass used in potable water systems was converted to lead-free.
- All projects moving forward will be built with lead-free brass.
- NOTE: GPS will stock a few key leaded items for use in heating systems only.
- Later this year, all leaded products will appear on pick tickets and invoices with the message “Contains Lead – Not For Use With Potable Water.”
What products are affected by the No-Lead Act?
This law affects thousands of products that are intended for use in potable water applications. Below is a list of some of the brass products that are now affected.

- Brass Fittings
- Check Valves
- Copper Meter Setters & Insetters
- Corporation Stops
- Curb Stops
- Faucets
- Indirect Tanks
- Meter Fittings & Couplings

- Showerheads
- Supplies
- Water Heaters
Do I need to remove leaded brass from existing service?
No, the No-Lead Act does not require you to replace leaded brass in existing properties. However, any renovations that occur after January 4, 2014 must comply. If you repair or remove parts or equipment that contain any leaded brass, you will have to replace them with lead-free parts, even if the leaded brass part that you are dealing with is not under repair.
How will lead-free brass change installations?
For the most part installation instructions will change very little. However, special considerations may be necessary when soldering no-lead brass.
How will I know if the brass I'm using is lead-free?
No-lead and leaded brass will look and weigh practically the same. You can tell by the handle cover color or look for a manufacturer’s mark of LF or NL on the product.
What can I do with my current inventory of leaded brass?
All unfinished jobs that are using leaded brass must have been completed by midnight of January 3, 2014. Now, the leaded brass must be replaced.
